GTA 6 projected to make $3 Billion in it’s First Year, could sell over 40 Million copies

Easily one of the most anticipated games of all time and definitely the most awaited release of this year, Grand Theft Auto 6 seems to set new records in the industry when it comes to sales revenues and number of copies sold. According to a recent report from Financial Times which cites data from DFC Intelligence (one of the oldest market analyst farms covering the Videogame industry), states that GTA 6 could make as much as $3.2 billion in it’s first year and could easily surpass $1 billion with pre-order revenue alone.

To put all those numbers into perspective, Grand Theft Auto 5 had broke the $1 billion mark in just 3 days of it’s release and what makes it all even more astonishing is the fact that all of those figures came only from it’s console versions as GTA 5 didn’t release for the PC platform at launch. Also, the $3.2 billion sales figure would be double the revenue brought by GTA 5 during the same period of it’s release which saw the game’s overall revenue increase even in it’s seventh, eighth and ninth years on the market.

What it all really means is that the upcoming GTA 6 is well on it’s way to become one of the, if not the biggest entertainment product of all-time, even surpassing other massive entertainment medium such as Films. Needless to say, the game is expected to break all the sales records ever.

“We think it’s going to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, not just in games but for all of media,” IDG Consulting chief Yoshio Osaki told FT. “The pent-up demand is greater than anything we’ve seen before.”

Though it’s nothing entirely new for the Grand Theft Auto franchise as many of it’s releases had previously set an exponentially high benchmark for sales in the industry, GTA 5 has sold over 205 million units since release and continues to be popular across all platforms well over a decade after being released. Red Dead Redemption 2, another gigantic hit from Rockstar Games, is also one of the highest selling games of all time with over 67 million copies sold across all platforms.

GTA 6 is set to release on both Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in fall 2025, with speculation that it will later be available on the PC platform as well.
