EA Origin end of service blunder leaves users in disbelief

The EA Origin end of service has taken many users by surprise. EA Origin was the EA equivalent of Valve’s Steam client, yet its specifically aimed for EA’s games. EA is a company known for its anti-consumer practices on the industry. Now they are focused on trying to take your so called digital “ownership” out of your games in case you don’t “upgrade”. We at Infinite Start will cover why this is happening.

Embrace, Extend, Extinguish

Similar to Microsoft’s own motto, EA loves replacing things that don’t work with things that work even worse. It has been announced by them that the EA Origin application will be replaced by their new EA App. Besides the name change sounding rather soulless, what matters the most is that you are forced to switch. While the EA App allows you to connect and transfer stuff from your Origin account, there’s other choices.

All your EA Origin download are stored locally on it’s corresponding folder (Origin Games). That means that you can use pretty much any launcher you have, including Steam. There’s features on Steam that allow you to connect external games to your Steam library. While it might not be the best choice since Valve’s launcher is bit unoptimized, its better than something that struggles to work.

In case you still wish to go the EA route for whatever reason, be aware that Linux users are completely barred from it. To use the new launcher, you need to be running a 64bit version of Windows, even Windows 7 counts surprisingly. Even if you are on Windows, you can still use the same feature that Steam provides in their library section.

There’s also ways to keep using Origin despite its rotation. Thanks to this neat open source project, it is possible to just block these annoying restrictions. While there’s really no reason to keep going for EA, some might still have friends that do not wish to move from Origin. Making it an important reason to keep going further with it despite the end of service.
