Ubisoft’s coming RPG Assassin’s Creed Shadows is currently slated for release on March 20, but there’s a catch. While the game’s release date feels reasonable due to the inclusion of finishing touches, its time of release seems rather competitive as it’s crowded by a few other massive samurai-based titles namely the Ghost of Tsushima’s sequel and Rise of the Ronin.
Taekida, which developed the Rise of the Ronin, even upped the ante when it announced that the formerly PS5 exclusive title is now coming to PC on 11 March. This could poach gamers from the much-anticipated title to other settings with its more intricate combat and political drama-the storyline is likely to attract gamers who would otherwise be going to Ubisoft’s most recent Assassin’s Creed.
Of course, everyone’s thinking, what a delicate moment it is for Shadows to come out. It already faced multiple delays: from November 2024 to February 2025, finally postponing it to March 20. The delays were attributed to Ubisoft’s intent to make it better and try to avoid feuding against February’s slew of releases, which includes Monster Hunter Wilds. Still some fans are worried that Assassin’s Creed Shadows, even with its multiple delays, could face difficulty making itself distinct in the crowded release window.
Assassin’s Creed fans have wished for a Japanese theme for some time now, and Shadows is finally coming along, as other developers shift in ever so slightly similar spheres of setting. Tsushima set a very high mark in 2020, and the sequel only ups the requisition. Meanwhile, Rise of the Ronin brings new style to Japanese history set in the turbulent Bakumatsu period about 250 years after Shadows.
While the settings differ, the overlap in themes and gameplay style puts these titles in direct competition. The stakes are particularly high for Ubisoft. The company has faced internal struggles and mixed receptions for recent releases, such as Star Wars Outlaws. The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows could play a pivotal role in stabilizing the publisher’s fortunes—or exacerbate its challenges if it falters.
With two major rivals releasing so close to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft will need to rely on its loyal fanbase and strong marketing to make an impact. Whether the game can rise above the competition remains to be seen.
