Blizzard Entertainment is reportedly working on a StarCraft shooter for the third time, according to a claim shared by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier in his upcoming book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. The claim was discussed during a recent episode of IGN’s Podcast Unlocked. The game is said to be under the leadership of Dan Hay, former head of the Far Cry series at Ubisoft.
Schreier confirmed that the project was in development at the time of his book’s writing, stating, “Yes, they are working on a StarCraft shooter, StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.” He emphasized that the information was not meant to scoop unannounced news but to tell a broader story about Blizzard’s history. Schreier also highlighted that this is the third attempt by Blizzard to create a StarCraft shooter, following the cancellations of StarCraft: Ghost in 2014 and the Ares project in 2019.
Hay, who joined Blizzard in 2022, is reportedly leading this new StarCraft project after the cancellation of another survival game he was working on. The development of the new shooter is still in its incubation phase, and there is uncertainty surrounding its future. Schreier remarked, “If it’s not cancelled, this is Blizzard after all, their history with StarCraft shooters is not good.”
While details are scarce, Schreier’s revelation has sparked interest in the gaming community, especially given Blizzard’s tumultuous history with StarCraft shooter projects. Whether this third attempt will finally see the light of day remains to be seen.
