Xbox chief Phil Spencer recently sparked discussions with his comments in an interview with IGN. Spencer mentioned he didn’t want to do “slimy platform things” to force a certain way of playing games. This remark has caught the attention of former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden.
Spencer’s comment came up during a discussion on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. He emphasized giving players a choice on how they play and who they play with. Spencer said, “I want to give you the choice on how you play your games and who you play with, and not try to do slimy platform things to force you to do what I want you to do.”
Layden responded on social media, showing amusement and liking various critical responses to Spencer’s choice of words. Some interpreted Spencer’s remark as a jab at PlayStation’s timed exclusive content for Call of Duty and other games.
Spencer acknowledged that Xbox had previously “broke the community” with timed exclusivity deals for Call of Duty during the Xbox 360 era. He expressed a desire to ensure that all players get the same content at the same time.
