Putin Initiates Russia’s Own Video Game Console After International Brands Exit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed his government to make a local video game console. This move comes after big names like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo left the Russian market.

Reports from RT mention Putin wants this done by June. The idea popped up after a discussion on the socio-economic development of the Kaliningrad region. Besides the console, Putin wants a special operating system and a cloud platform for games and apps. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will oversee this project, with a deadline set for June 15, 2024.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said this aims to boost Russia’s video game industry. It’s part of wider efforts to diversify the economy and develop technology. The Video Game Industry Development Organization (RVI) outlined a five-year plan with 83 points for game development in Russia. RVI plans to reconnect with international game funds and organizations linked to Russia and support local game development.

RVI believes a fully operational console could be ready between 2026 and 2027. This isn’t just about offering an alternative to foreign consoles. It’s about strengthening technology infrastructure and nurturing local talent in interactive entertainment. Putin’s push for a domestic option could reshape Russia’s game market and have global implications. The world is watching to see how this project unfolds and its impact on the global gaming scene.
