Players Surprised as Destiny 2 is Nominated for a Game Award in Community Support

Earlier today, The Game Awards announced their highly anticipated 2023 nominees.

This list was naturally met with some criticism, with the stand out exception being Community Support. In what is normally a fun category centered around “outstanding community support, transparency and responsiveness, inclusive of social media activity and game updates/patches,” one of the nominees was Destiny 2.

While this choice was always going to be met with some criticism, it stands out a lot more given the recent layoffs.

Shortly after the announcement, Liana Ruppert, one of the Destiny 2 community managers recently laid off, responded with a simple laugh before replying with a more nuanced comment.

Personal feelings aside as a team that asked for more people not less, I will say that Cozmo, Bruno, Ivan, and Timon advocate for players in a way that you will never know. There are so many poor decisions diverted because of their care and knowledge, and good decisions amplified

While the timing on this nom couldn’t be more ironic, I will shout it until the day I die that the group I got to work with is some of the best in the bizz. If Destiny wins, I will celebrate THEM, the people, and the player support team. They are absolute legends.

Griffin Bennett, who acted as global social media lead for Bungie before the recent layoffs, offered a rather cryptic comment.

Dylan Gafner, better known as former community manager dmg04, responded to Bennett with the following comment.

Cheers to studios who send their community teams to award shows when nominated for community specific awards.

Kudos to those that don’t reprimand their community team for celebrating upon a W, too.

This is likely a reference to 2019 when Destiny 2 won best Community Support. Instead of the team accepting the award, it was Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy who ultimately did.

While we will need to wait until Dec. 7 to see who wins, those interested can currently vote for this and all the other awards on The Game Awards site.
