PlayStation Head Jim Ryan is Retiring After Nearly Three Decades

Longtime PlayStation head, Jim Ryan, is officially retiring from his role as the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). The news comes straight from Sony themselves, who issued a press release to make the announcement. Ryan’s departure will take effect on April 1, 2024.

Jim Ryan’s legacy at the company stretches as far back as 1994, when he first joined Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE). In his many years that followed with Sony, he held numerous positions, including Head of Global Sales and Marketing. Of course, this news comes with all the weight that you’d imagine accompanies saying farewell to a journey that lasted more than half of his life.

Jim Ryan took the time to make a statement of his own regarding his reasons for retirement:

After 30 years, I have made the decision to retire from SIE in March 2024. I’ve relished the opportunity to have a job I love in a very special company, working with great people and incredible partners. But I’ve found it increasingly difficult to reconcile living in Europe and working in North America.

I will leave having been privileged to work on products that have touched millions of lives across the world; PlayStation will always be part of my life, and I feel more optimistic than ever about the future of SIE. I want to thank Yoshida-san for placing so much trust in me and being an incredibly sensitive and supportive leader.

Following Jim Ryan’s departure at the end of March 2024, President, COO and CFO of Sony Group Hiroki Totoki will officially step into the role as CEO of SIE.
