Digital Extremes, the team behind the wildly successful and ongoing Warframe, seized an opportunity at this year’s TennoCon to announce their next game, Soulframe. The upcoming title is said to be a “free-to-play action hybrid-MMORPG,” which shouldn’t be too surprising given the developer’s understanding of the infrastructure for that particular genre.
Gone are the space ninjas in place of a more fantasy-focused setting. That’s not the only major change from Warframe. Soulframe is said to be heavily reliant on melee combat, as opposed to the swift run n’ gun nature of the sci-fi predecessor. Still, the armor designs seen in the reveal trailer are distinctively “Warframe” in a numerous ways.
Soulframe creative director, Geoff Crookes, gave us a little insight into the basis of the team’s newest venture:
With Soulframe’s worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favourites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up.
Our team is really interested in this idea of nature and humanity colliding and we’ll be exploring a lot of those themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration.
Soulframe does not have a set release date/window, but given Digital Extremes’ current work, we can expect the title to receive decade-long support whenever it launches.
