Rumor: A New Mainline Splinter Cell Game is Finally in the Works

Oh, how sweet it feels to type this up, even if the emerging news is currently only a rumor. Well-known leaker, Tom Henderson, has reported via VGC that a new Splinter Cell game is finally in development after nearly a decade-long absence. And we’re not talking about another mobile or VR spin-off.

Before excitement spirals out of control, take note that production is said to be in the early stages. Surprisingly, the report claims that the iconic IP is not under its long-time development team at Ubisoft Montreal. There is a “small chance” the mystery Ubisoft team will unveil this mainline Splinter Cell game at an unspecified time in 2022.

Ubisoft’s shift back to the famous stealth series is said to be partially due to their desire to win back the fanbase, who have become increasingly frustrated with Sam Fisher appearing virtually everywhere but his own franchise. The move is also attributed to the company’s rebuilding of their image in the wake of various discrimination and sexual harassment claims. Or maybe it’s to regather and re-strategize following the reveal of the huge miss that is XDefiant.

Whatever the reason, the return of Splinter Cell would be undeniably massive for long-time fans that have watched Fisher pop up in multiple Ghost Recon operation events, Rainbow Six Siege, and the now-cancelled free-to-play mobile RPG Elite Squad. Needless to say, the community’s patience has worn thin over the years and many of us are likely to feverishly cling to this spark of hope heading into the new year. It’s the type of good news we could all use right about now.

Be sure to check back regularly for any updates on Splinter Cell‘s official status over the coming months.
