Sony released their Q1 financial statement, which included a lot of interesting details, including PlayStation 5 sales reaching 10.1 million units and PlayStation 4 achieving 116.4 million.
While a lot of people have commented on the difficulty of obtaining a PlayStation 5, these numbers show how crazy demand is right now. Back in Apr. 2021, reports were showing PlayStation 5, despite all the disadvantages, managed to outsell PlayStation 4. Hard to say how much longer it will persist but at least there is confirmation PlayStation 5 sales are strong instead of a simple lack of supply.
PlayStation 4, despite being overshadowed by the hype surrounding PlayStation 5 is still slowly increasing. It’s hard to say when exactly we will see a hard drop off, but it’s roughly three million consoles sold away from overtaking Game Boy and becoming the third highest selling game console of all time. Unfortunately, to overtake the Nintendo DS and become number two, Sony would need another 36 million.
Following a couple strong months, PlayStation Plus subscribers increased from 45 million to 46.3 million in the past year. However, software sales took a hit. PlayStation 4/5 achieved a combined 63.6 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2020, down from 91.4 million the previous year. Of those 10.5 million were first party titles, down from 18.7 million and digital downloads were at 71 percent, compared to 74 percent the previous year.
